Computer Repair Tips: 2 Reasons Your PC Might Not be Powering On

April 9, 2014 by Matt Forman

This is natural, but unnecessary, as there are plenty of simple reasons that could prevent your computer from turning on. You don’t necessarily have to start shopping for new computers, or even take the machine into a computer repair specialist just yet. There are a few things you can check first, which will save you time, money, and worry. Many things can cause this problem, but here are a couple of the easiest reasons you can check. Follow these computer repair tips and advice to diagnose your PC power issues and possibly even fix them yourself.

Check the Power Supply

This is important because you will feel very silly if you panic and take it in to a professional who will charge you money to point out a simple mistake. This can happen to anyone, so don’t feel embarrassed. Some power cables have multiple components and connections, and if someone happens to trip over the cord, they could come loose. This is especially true for laptops. So, check your cables and power strips to be sure they are in working order before you move on to any other possible theories. If you are working with a laptop, it may also be that the battery has completely lost its charge. Make sure you plug it in to find out. You should avoid letting your battery discharge completely, as this is bad for it. If the cord and battery are fine, it could also be a problem with the outlet itself. It may be on a switch that is turned off, or a fuse may have blown.

If it Turns on but Won’t Display Anything

There could be a few reasons this happens, but the biggest one is the monitor. If the problem is with your monitor, it can be annoying, but at least you know that your data is safe from harm or loss. Desktop computer monitors have to be plugged in, so be sure to check for a disconnected cable first. Even if they are all plugged in, try unplugging them and then reconnecting them firmly. It may be that something was just loose. Once that has been addressed, you should check that the brightness and contrast are set properly. If they are turned down too low, then you may not be able to see information being displayed. If this isn’t the case, try connecting a different monitor, and testing another cable. This will tell you if the monitor itself is malfunctioning. If the problem isn’t with the cables or monitor, then the computer is the problem.

If one of these simple solutions doesn’t work, then you might consider professional computer repair services. Choosing a computer repair service can be tough, but we have advice for that too. A professional will have more knowledge and tools to check many possible problems for you.
